MMD serves the MEMS market as a contract manufacturer, or foundry, of customer-specific MEMS devices, a business model readily embraced in other electronics markets such as semiconductors and electronic systems. By design, MMD offers no branded products of its own in order to focus entirely on the manufacturing needs of its MEMS customers.

MMD offers a wide range of device foundry services to this fast-growing MEMS market. MMD’s key initial service offerings include manufacturing for moderate to high volume MEMS customers (a few thousand to a few million units per year) and process/product development for new customer applications. MMD also supports packaging operations such as die attach and wire bonding. Finally, MMD partners with various MEMS design groups so that it can support a customer’s entire spectrum of potential needs, from MEMS concept and design through to volume production.

The MMD Advantage

MMD’s multi-fold advantage starts with its laser-like focus in performing MEMS production solely for external customers. MMD’s plans specifically include a variety of flexible fabrication tools and processes readily adaptable to customers’ unique needs. A second crucial advantage for MMD lies in its use of an existing, in-place, highly-capable clean-room facility and equipment set, providing a substantial, immediate cost advantage.

MMD has supplemented this equipment set with additional purchases and has upgraded all equipment with touchscreen controls and in-line process monitoring, facilitating automation and flexible manufacturing.

Finally, MMD is tapping the operations and quality expertise of its ISO-certified strategic partner EPI to quickly ramp up high volume, quality production. This will enable MMD to immediately address market segments in which quality is paramount and margins are more substantial such as medical and Aerospace/DoD. This quality focus provides tangible benefits to MEMS production outside of these market segments as well.
